About

Cacimba do Padre is the headline wave of Fernando de Noronha and home to what is widely called the longest tube section in Brazil. The peak is a sand-bottom A-frame framed at its south end by the Dois Irmãos rocks; the rocks shelter the takeoff and the bank funnels both rights and lefts into a thick, hollow wall. The Hang Loose Pro made the bay famous through the 2000s, and even without a contest in town it remains the first stop on the island when the period climbs into the teens.

The break wants north-north-west swell at eleven seconds or longer to wake up. Hs around one to three metres is the sweet spot; above that it closes out across the bay and below it goes flat. Low to mid tide holds the bank’s shape — high tide backs the wave off the sandbar. Wind is the gate: the standard east-south-east trade is cross-shore at the peak, so the clean window is the dawn calm or a south-south-east offshore. Season is December through March, peak February, and the swell arrives in week-long pulses with five-day rest in between.

Advanced to expert. The takeoff is steep and the lip lands square; under-gunned boards get pitched. The Dois Irmãos rocks at the south end are a real hazard on a bigger day — the inside section runs you toward them on a falling tide, and a leash catching the bottom there is a problem. Crowd is light by mainland standards because access to the island is capped, but the peak is narrow and the priority sit goes to the regulars who spend the season here. Bring boards rated for the size you mean to surf.
