The Box.

good for: surf

About

The Box is a right-hand reef bombora that breaks roughly 800 metres north of Main Break, in front of Cape Mentelle. Below sea level until a swell hits the ledge, it stands up as one of the squarest barrels in the sport — a thick, slabbing tube that throws over flat rocks. The WSL has run heats here when the tour bumps off Main Break for a different test of the world’s best.

The Box wants west swell with mid period; short-period pulses lack the energy to ledge properly, and very long-period swell overloads the reef. Workable from south-west through west-northwest, but too much south clamps the section. Light east offshore grooms it. Best on a high, rising tide, when there’s enough water over the rocks to backdoor the peak without hitting bottom on the take-off.

Expert only, and that’s not a marketing tag. The wave breaks below sea level, sucks dry as the lip throws, then slams onto a flat plate of reef. Falls go straight onto rock; leashes snap when they catch. The take-off requires a backdoor commitment few surfers will make. The crew is small and local; visitors who turn up on mid-size days get a pass, bigger swells go by hierarchy.
