Pico das Almas.

good for: surf

About

Pico das Almas sits on the Caucaia coast about thirty kilometres north-west of Fortaleza, on the strip of beach between Cumbuco village and the Cauípe lagoon. It is the section in front of Vila Galé Cumbuco, and the most exposed peak on a stretch otherwise known for kite gear. Sand-bottom beach break, multiple shifting peaks, slightly more swell than the village to the south. Locals call it the surf address of the Cumbuco coast — Cumbuco proper is where the kitesurfers live.

The break wants north to north-east swell at 7 seconds or longer. Anything below threshold and it goes flat; the same trade winds that build Cumbuco’s kite reputation are cross-shore here, ranging east through east-south-east and chopping the face by mid-morning. All tides with mid often best as the bank moves with the season. Surf window peaks January through April, with March the strongest month. Once the trade fills past the village, the kitesurfers arrive and the peak gets shared.

Intermediate to advanced terrain — paddling out is an open-beach affair with longshore current pushing west on the dropping tide, and the outer banks shift hard from one season to the next. Crowd is lighter than Titanzinho but the dawn surf crew overlaps with hotel guests and the morning kite school. Easy access from the beach road; nothing exotic, nothing technical, just a reliable beach break at the cleaner end of a long sand coast.
